Magnus' Story S1E1

"The Case of the Odd Behavior"

The Great Storm is over. Normalcy, at least in part, has returned to Æther City. Magnus, finally getting back to his routine, is checking his electronic mail to see if there might be a suitable request for his services.

There is. At least maybe.

The devlin Elara Vane, staff journalist at The City Report believes that Edmon Alonn, long time council member, is displaying such odd behavior recently, that he may not be himself. From bizarre votes to acts of magick, Alonn needs to be watched and, if needed, exposed.

But Elara has a reputation as a conspiracy nut for a reason.

Still, Magnus agrees to meet Ms. Vane at a local arcane tea shop, and while enjoying the locally grown house brew, and some delicious dragonberry scones, listens to the journalist's plea for assistance.

Anxious as she is, her request is compelling, and, she is paying well.

The job will be tricky though. Edmon Alonn is an Æther City elite. And Magnus will need to get hard proof that the councilman is not himself and do it without raising suspicion. Fortunately, Edmon takes constitutionals, daily, after his workday has finished and before heading home.

An opportunity.

But first Magus heads back to the office to investigate some nuances of the case first while also waiting for Elara to reach out with the public voting records of the council for the last six months.

It does seems as though Edmon Alonn has been making some erratic votes. Certainly out of character. But Magnus, and Elara, need more proof.

So Magnus reaches out to Nyx, a Veil Society agent and hacker. And doing a favor for Magnus, Nyx goes about diving deep into the the issue.

It looks as though some of the voting are in line with some strange behavior Magos Lyra, the head Arcane Engineer in-charge of the Æther Core, has been making.

...interesting.

Now having a lead, Magnus decides to stakes-out the foyer of The Fang in hopes of detecting if any of the other council members are being surveilled.

Eventually, after watching a few of the council members leave for the day, and feel confident that there is nothing suspicious going on, Magnus tails Alonn as Alonn goes for his daily walk. Meandering through Old Town, stopping to admire the district architecture and occasionally talking to citizens, the councilman makes his way to a warehouse.

But not before Magnus surreptitiously casts Detect Magic on the Alonn.

Nothing. At least nothing that would say that the appearance of the councilman is obfuscated.

At the warehouse, hiding in the shadows, Magnus watches closely as Alonn enters the building through two modern and sturdy looking double doors.

Deciding to play it safe, Magnus doesn't go inside and instead goes back to The Fang to spy on the last council member to leave for the day. While doing this he does some investigative searching on The Flow for information on the building he just saw Alonn go into. Turns out the building is own by a wealthy businessman name Dena Harbin, who, as it turns out, is heavily invested in the city's energy infrastructure as well as the Æther Core.

After his stake-out at The Fang, the ranger heads back to Old Town and the warehouse, figuring the late hour might provide an opportunity to sneak in and discover why Edmon Alonn ended his walk by going there.

Curious, Magnus uses his arcane energy to detect wither the door is magical and identify its properties. To unlock its secrets and finish the spell, he must touch the door.

...he hopes there is no alarm.
